What to love about a salad with citrus fruit

Detox salads work well for when you are craving a flavorful salad fast and looking to burn fat, trim the waistline and obtain stunning and glowing skin!

This is a wonderful salad to add to any diet (along with this detox kale salad) and is simple to make, enjoyable and bursting with a citrus dressing.

Salads, this on in particular, are packed with vitamin C and this one gets it from orange juice, lime juice, and grapefruit.

It also contains avocado oil, chili powder, salt and pepper, making it a perfect detoxing salad to enjoy as a side or main dish!

This detox salad comes together quickly in as little as 10 minutes! It truly is one of our favorite easy salad recipes so far bursting with juicy flavors just as delicious, if not more as this tomato cucumber mozzarella salad, skinny roasted vegetable quinoa salad, and this kale salad.

There is a similar recipe in my Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Cookbook. In fact, one reader told me on Facebook, that the Quinoa Citrus Salad is his favorite recipe from my cookbook so far and he has made it over 5 times in 2 weeks! That says something, right?

So, I have altered the recipe to be extremely detoxing without grains for a Paleo and Keto-Friendly meal.

Key Ingredients

  • Leafy arugula greens, spinach, kale or mixed greens – Leafy greens are bursting with phytonutrients, which powerhouse the body and are essential to keeping you alive. They are found in plant forms (especially spinach) and known to reduce colon and other cancers, reduce inflammation, obesity, reduce oxidation levels in the body and are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
  • Citrus fruit – This salad is a mix of grapefruit, navel oranges or blood oranges, and avocado. All ingredients increase the immunity due to vitamin C and high antioxidants, are packed with fiber to flush away toxins, and contain pectin’s to support healthy digestion. Be sure to get all the benefits of grapefruit and try my citrus salsa and grapefruit juice recipes.
  • Avocado – Heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids and beautiful glowing skin comes from the oil in avocados. Both an avocado and avocado oil is used in this detox salad recipe giving you and extra dose of nutrients!
  • Pistachios – nuts add beautiful crunch and texture to this citrus salad.
  • Citrus vinaigrette dressing – loaded with citrus flavor!
    • Orange juice
    • Lime juice
    • Avocado oil
    • Salt
    • Pepper
    • Chili powder

See recipe card for quantities.

Recipe Substitutions

If you want to be flexible with different types of salad ingredients, then here are a few substitutions that you can use.

  • Lettuce – instead of mixed greens, as shown in the images, you can use romaine lettuce, arugula, spinach, butter lettuce, or chopped baby kale.
  • Nuts – Try mixing it up with almond slices or walnuts.
  • Add grains – You can also toss in 1-2 2 cups of cooked quinoa or wild rice.
  • Meat – feel free to add cooked fish or grilled chicken on top for extra protein.

Recipe Instructions

  1. First make the salad dressing. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, lime juice, oil, chili powder, salt and pepper.
  2. Next, assemble the citrus salad. On four plates, evenly divide the greens, orange, grapefruit, avocados, and nuts. Drizzle with the dressing and serve immediately.

About Citrus Vinaigrette Salad Dressing

This citrus salad dressing recipe is by far the BEST citrus dressing that I highly suggest using on all your favorite salads and seafood dishes. It brings out the best flavors without an overload of salt. Lime and chili powder just pair so well together with citrus fruits.

Recipe Tips

I do not suggest making this salad in advance. The avocado is best fresh and the lettuce will get soggy if the dressing is put on too soon. But you can prep this easy salad dressing ahead of time and mix all of the ingredients together right before serving.
